Many expat mums have goals and dreams that they want to achieve, but so often never actually achieve them.
We fail because we prioritise everyone else over ourselves. We give all our time and energy to our family, meeting their needs, that we have nothing left in the tank for ourselves.
We fail because we get stuck in our heads. We make it a ‘big thing’ in our heads, then we allow it to overwhelm us. Why? Because we haven’t done anything for ourselves in so long, we don’t know where to start.
We fail because we stop recognising our own skills and abilities. We lose confidence in what we can achieve. We allow that big ogre of doubt to occupy our minds.
We fail because doing anything for ourselves feels self indulgent. We allow the feeling of guilt to take over and it prevents us from then doing anything that is for ourselves, for our own goals, for our own aspirations.
If we are constantly allowing all of these things to happen, then they perpetuate themselves. We continue to lose confidence in ourselves. We continue to question our mere worthiness. We stop allowing ourselves to dream and set goals because it hurts too much when we never realise them.
So what can we do about it?
Firstly write down your big why. What is your goal? What is your dream? What do you want for yourself? Write it down. Get your kids pretty pens out and make a picture. Get some magazines and make a collage. Get as creative as you want and need to be. But somehow document your big why.
Then break that down into smaller actions. What are the things that you need to do to achieve this? What small steps come together to make up that one big step? When will you do each one? What support do you need to make each action happen? Again, get creative or start journaling. Whatever works for you.
Most importantly, put these in your diary. Add them to your to do list. Find at least one hour a week that is yours, and only yours. Dedicate this time to working on your actions. Don’t give that hour up for an appointment. Don’t give it up to go get the groceries. This is your time, protect it. And make it productive.
